Rolls-Royce Spectre evaluation: the pinnacle of electric luxury.
Rolls-Royce's inaugural venture into electric vehicles could potentially be the finest in the world; however, it is accompanied by a significant price tag.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the new $420,000 all-electric Rolls-Royce Spectre is not the luxurious ride quality or the enchanting illuminated stars embedded in the intricately designed headliner. It is not the impressive 577 horsepower or the 266 miles of driving range. It does not lie in the indulgent massaging seats or the striking presence of the upright, chrome front grille. Even the aerodynamically refined yet classically styled Spirit of Ecstasy statuette does not capture my attention as much.
What truly stands out to me about the Spectre is the sound it produces. As an electric vehicle, it lacks the traditional engine noise. Instead, it serves as a serene cocoon, designed to minimize external sounds through the meticulous efforts of highly skilled engineers. To enhance the driving experience, the Spectre emits a subtle digital tone upon acceleration, adding a touch of vibrancy to the journey.
Indeed, almost every contemporary electric vehicle produces some form of synthetic sound when the accelerator is engaged; however, the Spectre stands apart. This vehicle emits a sound reminiscent of what one might expect from an all-knowing, formidable extraterrestrial presence gliding through the atmosphere in a science fiction film, a resonant tone that underscores the moment when humanity realizes it is on the brink of an extraordinary encounter.
This ethereal symphony is so faint that it is nearly imperceptible, yet in conjunction with the car's profound silence, the effect is truly magnificent. This is merely one facet of an entirely sophisticated experience that surpasses any other electric vehicle currently available.
On borrowed tech
The 360-degree camera is one example of the technology that Rolls-Royce engineers have adopted from their parent company, BMW. However, it would have been preferable if they had incorporated additional features, such as BMW's advanced hands-free driver assistance system.
The infotainment system is relatively up-to-date, providing integrated navigation and the ability to locate charging stations. It supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; however, I encountered difficulties getting the latter to function. Perhaps my last-generation Samsung Galaxy S23 was deemed too outdated by the vehicle. While the audio is delivered through a bespoke 16-speaker system that is both powerful and elegantly refined, it unfortunately does not include Dolby Atmos support.
Thus, while this cutting-edge Rolls-Royce may not encompass every available feature, it compensates with an extraordinarily detailed interior, floor mats crafted from the softest lambswool, and a meticulously designed array of polished metal controls, all exhibiting the ideal weight and tactile sensation.
A Quiet Fate
Since 1904, the Rolls-Royce name has been synonymous with premier automobiles, and it seems that the past 120 years have culminated in this significant moment.
Should you be fortunate enough to witness an early Rolls-Royce glide past, such as a Silver Ghost or a Phantom, you will likely notice the absence of sound. Despite their formidable engines exceeding seven liters in capacity—50 percent larger than that of a contemporary Ford Mustang GT—these early luxury vehicles were equipped with exhaust systems designed to reduce drivetrain noise.
With the introduction of the Spectre, Rolls-Royce’s inaugural battery-electric vehicle, the engineers can finally move away from the complexities of traditional internal combustion engines to achieve a smooth and silent ride. The Spectre is powered by two electric motors that together produce 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque. Weighing an impressive 6,371 pounds, which surpasses that of a Cadillac Escalade, it can still accelerate to 60 mph in a mere 4.4 seconds.
While it possesses remarkable speed when required, the vehicle offers an enhanced range when driven gently, achieving up to 266 miles on a single charge from its 102 kWh battery pack.
Moreover, a more relaxed driving style not only improves efficiency but also enhances the overall driving experience. The Spectre exhibits a serene character, with a throttle pedal that necessitates a firm press to fully access its power. The brake pedal is similarly composed, complemented by slow steering that provides just enough feedback to inform the driver of the vehicle's directional changes.
All four individuals, indeed. The rear-wheel steering feature simplifies maneuvering this nearly 18-foot-long ultra-coupe in confined parking areas. Additionally, the 360-degree camera and standard automated parking assist in preventing damage to any of the 23-inch wheels, a concern I was particularly mindful of during my loan period, as replacing one would undoubtedly have been financially burdensome.
Mortgage time
While entry into a Spectre begins at $420,000, navigating the purchasing process requires fulfilling several criteria. Considering that options such as the chartreuse paint featured here are priced at $13,100 individually, anticipate a significantly higher total expenditure. This vehicle has a final price of $560,100, which includes a $2,750 destination fee.
Is this a justifiable investment? For those with a more modest budget, this question is challenging to answer. The Spectre may not represent the best value, yet it is undeniably remarkable, particularly given its association with Rolls-Royce. The allure of its distinctive sound adds to its overall appeal.
Additional electric vehicles are on the horizon, but patience will be necessary; an SUV is slated for release in 2027, leading up to the brand's transition to an all-electric lineup by 2030. The aesthetic and performance of these future EVs remain uncertain at this stage, but if they deliver a similar auditory experience, they will certainly have a promising beginning.
