Amazon, similar to Meta, Google, Samsung, and Snap, is developing a new set of augmented-reality (AR) glasses, as reported by The Information. These AR glasses, codenamed Jayhawk, are said to feature a full-color display in one eye, along with integrated microphones, speakers, and a camera.
This report arrives just ahead of Meta's anticipated unveiling of its "Hypernova" smart glasses at the upcoming Connect event. According to Bloomberg, Meta's glasses are expected to surpass its Ray-Ban smart glasses, providing a small display for mini apps and alerts on the right lens. Additionally, Meta is also in the process of creating a pair of AR glasses referred to as Orion.
In 2023, Amazon introduced its third-generation Echo Frame smart glasses, but their capabilities seem lacking compared to Meta’s Ray-Bans. While Amazon is projected to launch its first AR glasses by late 2026 or early 2027, The Information suggests that a version designed for delivery drivers could be released even sooner.
Amazon's initial plan is to produce 100,000 units of the glasses for delivery drivers, internally named "Amelia," as reported by The Information. These glasses are expected to have a bulkier design compared to the consumer version, featuring a display intended to guide drivers on where to deliver packages. Last year, Reuters reported that these glasses would provide drivers with "turn-by-turn navigation on a small embedded screen."
