Apple has reached an agreement to acquire Pixelmator, a widely used image editing application for Mac and iOS platforms. The announcement was made by Pixelmator on its blog, highlighting that this acquisition will enable the company to “reach an even wider audience and make an even bigger impact on the lives of creative people around the world.”

In a statement regarding the acquisition, Pixelmator noted:

Pixelmator has entered into an agreement to be acquired by Apple, pending regulatory approval. At this moment, there will be no significant changes to the Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator applications. We encourage you to stay tuned for exciting updates in the future.

Details surrounding the acquisition remain undisclosed, with the deal still awaiting regulatory approval for Apple’s purchase of the Lithuanian firm. This process can be complex; while Microsoft successfully acquired Activision Blizzard, other deals, such as Nvidia's attempt to acquire Arm, Amazon's purchase of iRobot, and more recently, Adobe's acquisition of Figma, have faced regulatory challenges.

Following Apple's acquisition of the popular weather application Dark Sky in 2020, the app was discontinued in 2022, with its technology integrated into Apple's native weather application. However, other software acquisitions by Apple, such as Final Cut and Logic Pro, continue to be available years after their purchase.

Over time, Pixelmator Pro has emerged as a competitive and more affordable alternative to Adobe Photoshop, priced at a one-time fee of $49.99. It provides a comprehensive array of tools for photo editing, retouching, design creation, drawing, and more. The latest update to the app has enhanced its masking capabilities and introduced AI features to facilitate background removal from images.
